Dick Pond shoe stores will 'Share the Love'
Valentine's Day weekend brings about thoughts of dining, dancing and romance - and, maybe, walking and running.
With the promise that a spring thaw actually does follow this ridiculous winter weather we endure around here, those who walk or run as part of their daily exercise routine just might be considering new shoes for that purpose.
Combine that with the "love" theme of Valentine's Day, and you've got a good promotion for the Dick Pond Athletics store at 303 N. Second St. in St. Charles and the others throughout the region.
This family-run business will conduct a "Share the Love" promotion this weekend in which 10 percent of all of the stores' sales will be donated to the American Red Cross for relief in Haiti.
Samantha Senner of Dick Pond Athletics estimates that between $2,000 and $3,000 could be raised.
If you are itching to start walking or running outside without worrying about snow and ice, you can get the proper shoes and help those in need at the same time.
Another super show: The Geneva Cultural Arts Commission once again put on one heck of a show with this year's "Dancing With the Geneva Stars" event last Saturday night in front of a boisterous full house at Eagle Brook Country Club.
Most event planners would gladly bottle half of the energy and enthusiasm ignited at this event and use it for any other fundraiser being planned.
A special tip of the hat has to go to Linda Cunningham, whose State Street Dance Studio in Geneva makes this event possible with its donation of lessons for the participating couples and all of the other entertainment during the show.
But mostly, she was an incredible warrior this year because she worked the entire day in a weakened state from days of fighting off a bad cold.
Maybe sharing sweets: You can never be certain as to exactly why you agree to do something you probably have no business doing. That's how one might summarize my recent commitment to participate in the "60 Men Who Cook" fundraising event May 7 at the county fairgrounds.
Event planner Terry Emma finally talked me into this event, which benefits various Geneva organizations.
I haven't cooked much of anything on my own since maybe boiling a can of tomato soup in college, but I believe I have it in me to share our family's excellent recipe for fudge. So it's quite likely we'll be sharing the sweets!
Deserve a big crowd: No matter how you tally it up, the Geneva girls' basketball team has been on one of those historic rolls that not many - if any - area boys or girls teams will ever match.
Going into this Friday's home game against rival Batavia, this extraordinary team has compiled a 53-game regular-season winning streak.
When the Geneva and Batavia boys square off, as they also are doing Friday, but in Batavia, they draw overflow crowds.
But the Geneva girls deserve a full gym Friday night in this final regular season game for some seniors who have been on the full ride for this impressive streak.
