Improvements slated for Waubonsie Lake Park
The Fox Valley Park District has been awarded a $400,000 grant by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources for the development of Montgomery Road Park in conjunction with planned improvements and upgrades for adjoining Waubonsie Lake Park.
The Park District acquired the 19.8-acre Montgomery Road Park as part of the 2008 Open Space, Park and Recreation Investment plan. Located just south of Kautz and Montgomery roads, the parcel will provide space for additional athletic fields and expand the Waubonsie Creek corridor.
A new regional trail along the north side of Waubonsie Creek will provide a circuitous route and connect with highly used trails encircling Waubonsie Lake to the north. Plans include two ball fields with lights, four soccer fields, a trailhead/shelter on Waubonsie Creek with interpretive overlooks, a 180-vehicle capacity parking lot, a restroom/storage shelter and native plantings throughout with rain gardens and swales to collect, clean and recharge stormwater runoff.
Improvements at Waubonsie Lake include new restrooms, a shelter at the lake's edge with an accessible overlook and fireplace, accessible overlooks on each side of the creek, an adventure playground for 2-to-5-year-olds, floating pier, and an environmentally friendly parking area.
