Be a good neighbor; shovel your walk

Recently, while driving south on McLean Boulevard in Elgin, I was forced to brake and swerve into the left lane near the intersection of McLean and Larkin. The reason? An elderly man was walking with a walker up the road. I was shocked and wondered what he was doing.

As I looked around the area I noticed that none of the sidewalks were shoveled. I find this to be a complete travesty. As a resident in the city of Elgin I find that about half the residents in my neighborhood shovel their sidewalks. It is impossible to take a walk with my young children on a mild winter day because they can't get over some of the unshoveled areas.

Residents should receive a fine for not shoveling their sidewalks. If our city is looking correct some of its budget issues, this may be an easy solution. Maybe then our elderly residents could actually get where they need to go without having to risk their lives pushing a walker down McLean Boulevard.
