Truck fire damages Hampshire gas station
A truck carrying meat products caught fire Wednesday night at a gas station in Hampshire, shutting down access to diesel fuel and damaging an overhead canopy.
No one was injured in the fire at about 10:40 p.m. at the Road Ranger gas station at 19N681 Route 20.
Michael Lucas, fire investigator for the Hampshire Fire Department and the Kane County Fire Investigation Task Force, said a 2004 Peterbilt semitrailer pulled off Interstate 90 and parked. It is not known if the driver was pumping gas at the time, Lucas said. The cab caught fire, which quickly spread to a bank of diesel fuel pumps and the overhead canopy, Lucas said. The fire was contained in about 30 minutes and did not damage the adjacent building that houses a convenience store.
The cause of the fire is unknown and a state fire marshal investigation is ongoing.
The business was open on Thursday, but an employee said diesel fuel was unavailable.
Fire units from Burlington, Pingree Grove, Huntley and Genoa assisted on the scene.
