Former Deer Park leader to be mourned

As this election week comes to a close, the Barrington area is readying a final farewell for one of its own former elected leaders.

Onetime Deer Park plan commissioner and trustee Gil Murdock, 83, died at home Jan. 26.

A visitation for him will be held at 9:30 a.m. next Saturday, Feb. 13, at Davenport Family Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. in Barrington. The visitation will be followed by a memorial service at 10:30 a.m.

Murdock was born in Chicago in January 1927, but moved to the Barrington area in 1940. He graduated from Barrington High School in 1946 and went on to serve in the Army 425th Quartermaster Company in Naples, Italy, during World War II.

Murdock remained a member of the Army Air Force Reserve until 1950, and enjoyed a 45-year career with ComEd until his retirement in 1992.

He and his wife Shirley moved to Deer Park in 1959, where he became involved with local government.

Murdock was an Eagle Scout who remained active with the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of Barrington's American Legion Post 158 for more than 62 years.

His wife, Shirley, preceded him in death after 49 years of marriage, but Murdock is survived by one of his two brothers, his two sons, daughter and son-in-law.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions be made to Citizens for Conservation at 459 W. Highway 22, Barrington IL 60010.
