Aurora teen charged in fatal crash which killed his mom

A 17-year-old Aurora man is free on $2,500 bond after being charged Wednesday with reckless homicide in connection with the death of his mother.

Antonio A. Vieyra, of the 1100 block of High Street, is accused of braking his car while his mother clung to it, sending the woman into the pavement.

Ludivina Vieyra, 50, of the 1100 block of High Street in Aurora, died at Provena Mercy Center Hospital shortly after arrival Monday night due to injuries she sustained in the crash.

Aurora spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the mother jumped onto the running board of the boy's 1995 Dodge 1500 pickup truck after the teen fled the family home following an argument he had with his father.

Ferrelli would not disclose the nature of the argument but sources familiar with the investigation said it was over the father's inability to give the 17-year-old $5 for lunch money.

Vieyra jumped onto the vehicle's passenger side running board to stop the teen from leaving, Ferrelli said, but the teen drove a few blocks before slamming on the brakes, hurling the woman to the ground. The woman suffered massive head injuries in the fall. She was taken to the hospital by paramedics with the Aurora fire department, but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital Monday. The incident occurred about 9 p.m. at Pine and Assell avenues in Aurora.

Ferrelli said the preliminary investigation did not reveal any immediate signs of drug or alcohol involvement.

Vieyra's next court date was set for 9 a.m. Feb. 17 in Courtroom 217 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
