Glennon, Prospect sweep Hersey
Lexi Glennon has spent four years as Prospect's quiet, dependable star, content to have played side-by-side with, among others, her older sister and good friends Sarah and Rachel Hunt.
Tuesday night, she played side-by-side with Hersey star Megan Rogowski, limiting her to 6 points while posting 16 of her own and leading the Knights to a surprising 44-33 win at Hersey and a Mid-Suburban East season sweep.
"I take pride in my defense, especially if I'm having an off night shooting," said the 5-foot-10 Knights guard, whose 8-of-8 at the free throw line, with six in the fourth quarter, enabled the Knights (16-9, 5-4) to maintain and then stretch their lead.
But she noted her teammates were well aware of helping her out with Rogowski. While she likes to "keep (Rogowski) in arm's distance," she knows her teammates were "helping out on screens."
"The last 5-6 games, we've been playing excellent defense," said Prospect coach Martha Kelly. And, echoing Glennon, she noted, "We pride ourselves on our defense."
It showed. Hersey shot just 12-of-47 from the floor, had every shot challenged and five blocked, mostly by the lengthy presence of 6-2 Sarah Hunt, who added 10 points.
Prospect pulled away at the end of the third quarter into the fourth as Ashley Wabik came off the bench to convert a putback, Sarah Hunt put down a nice drive, Marissa Pettenuzzo made a key 3-point play and Sarah Winans converted a huge layin off the spread offense.
Winans, battling the flu, contributed 5 points, pesky defense and key ballhandling against Hersey's trademark press.
The Huskies, playing with a nearly full complement on their roster for the first time in weeks, were "disappointed," said head coach Mary Fendley.
"You'd have thought we'd have played better. Our inability to score in the fourth quarter didn't help."
Senior point guard Julia Fredian paced the Huskies (18-7, 6-3) with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, but had no more luck containing Glennon than any teammate who rotated on her.
And with nothing on the line, Prospect played like it was in the MSL championship game.
"It's kind of a playoff atmosphere," said Kelly. "It's our hope that these last games will prepare us for the playoffs."
