Ribeiro wins 9th Dist. primary

Simon Ribeiro won the Green party nomination in the race for the 9th Congressional District seat, easily beating Morris Shanfield on Tuesday.

With 286 of the 295 precincts reporting, Ribeiro had 65 percent of the votes compared to Shanfield, who had 35 percent.

Ribeiro will face incumbent Democrat Jan Schakowsky of Evanston in November. Both Ribeiro and Shanfield have unsuccessfully tried to unseat Schakowsky in previous general elections.

Also running is Joel Barry Pollak, 32, a human rights lawyer from Skokie, who was the only Republican candidate on the primary ballot.

Ribeiro, 28, an Evanston schoolteacher and swim instructor, said his top issues are getting universal health care coverage, advocating for a national central bank and settling the Arab-Israeli conflict.
