Kurtz, Koehler take McHenry Co. Board Dist. 2 seats
McHenry County Board Chairman Ken Koehler held off most challengers in a five-way race Tuesday to secure a Republican nomination for one of two contested seats in board District 2, according to unofficial results.
If those results hold up, he'll be joined on the ballot by McHenry County College Trustee Donna Kurtz whose apparent win would spell the end of Lyn Orphal's long tenure on the board.
With all precincts reporting, Kurtz had received with 1,683 votes, followed by Koehler with 1,535. Orphal, who chairs the board's Human Resources Committee, finished last with 458 votes.
No Democrats have filed to run for the seats in November, but the party still can caucus candidates onto the ballot later this year.
Kurtz attributed her success to knocking on doors, explaining her positions of cutting spending and lowering taxes.
"I shared with them my goals and listened to their concerns," she said. "When times are tough, in a local economy, you tighten your belt."
Ellen Brady Mueller and Sandra DePaul finished third and fourth.
