Injured Glenbard West student's condition upgraded
One of the Glenbard West High School students hospitalized following a one-vehicle crash Friday has shown signs of improvement, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Demarco Whitley's condition was upgraded from "critical" to "serious" Tuesday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. A running back on the school's football team, Whitley had to be extricated from the car Friday evening along with fellow football player Pierre Washington-Steel. Washington-Steel remains in critical condition.
The car the two players were in struck a utility pole on Swift Road, north of St. Charles Road in Glen Ellyn. The DuPage County Sheriff's Department has not released details on the crash.
Washington-Steel and Whitley were both members of a football team that made its way to the Class 7A state championship game. Following the crash, a Facebook- and text-driven candlelight vigil was held Sunday at Duchon Field. Roughly 500 people attended to offer support as relatives and friends of the popular athletes spoke to the crowd.
A Facebook group titled "This is for Pierre and Demarco" has nearly 2,400 members pulling for their recovery.
