Report: South Elgin man fights with cops, tries to grab gun
A South Elgin man, who got into a scuffle with his son Monday morning, turned his ire on police by attacking four officers and trying to take the gun from one, authorities said.
Jeff S. Schultz, 35, of the 1100 block of Sunbury Road, was charged with disarming a peace officer and four counts of aggravated battery.
South Elgin Sgt. Mike Doty said two officers were called to Schultz's house at 3:30 a.m. after Schultz and his son began fighting after an argument.
Two more officers showed up but Schultz "became very agitated," when they started talking to him, so an officer went to handcuff Schultz, Doty said.
Things went downhill from there.
"He decided to fight with the officer and in the midst of the fight, he attempted to disarm one of our officers," Doty said.
According to charging documents, Schultz punched a police officer in the face and pushed him into a door, wall and closet, hit another officer in the chest and shoulders and pushed him into a door, wall and closet, struck a third officer and hit a sergeant in the wrist.
He also tried to pull the gun out of the first officer's holster, Doty said.
Schultz has a history of scuffling with police.
In 2005, he was sentenced to six months court supervision for resisting an Elgin police officer, court records show.
None of the South Elgin officers required any medical attention.
Schultz's bail was set at $35,000, which means he needs to post $3,500 to secure his release while the case is pending.
Schultz was unable to post that amount and was transported to the Kane County lockup and is due in court Feb. 9 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
If found guilty of disarming a peace officer, he could spend between three and seven years in prison.
