1 injured, pets killed in Round Lake Beach fire

One person was injured and two cats died in a Sunday night fire near Round Lake Beach, fire officials said.

Fire Marshall Doug Zeigler, of the Greater Round Lake Area Fire Protection District, said firefighters saw heavy smoke coming from the rear windows of the two-story home on the 1100 block of Hillside Drive in unincorporated Lake County when they arrived about 8:30 p.m.

A female resident had escaped and called the fire department from a neighbor's house, Zeigler said. The other members of the family of five were not home at the time of the fire.

The woman was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with nonlife threatening injuries, he said. Her condition was not known Monday

He said firefighters contained the fire to the rear of the home, but not before flames, smoke and water caused about $85,000 in damage and left the home uninhabitable.

Because of a lack of hydrants in the area, a second alarm was called and tanker trucks from Lake Villa, Antioch, Wauconda, Fox Lake and Grayslake arrived at the scene to assist, Zeigler said.

He said fire is being investigated. The cats were discovered by firefighters inside the home, and both succumbed to smoke inhalation.
