Fox Valley teams offer help through Hoops for Haiti tourney

A league of area private schools is using a girls basketball tournament to raise support for Haitians impacted by last month's devastating earthquake.

The Fox Valley Athletic Conference hosts the Hoops for Haiti Invitational on Tuesday, Feb. 2 and Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Einstein Academy in Elgin. Five schools will field seventh- and eighth-grade teams in the tournament: Fox River Country Day and Harvest Christian Academy, both of Elgin, Quest Academy of Palatine, Trinity Oaks Christian Academy of Cary and Faith Christian Academy of Geneva. Einstein and Da Vinci academies of South Elgin are also members of the conference.

Proceeds from admission sales to the games will go to the Red Cross for its Haitian relief efforts. The Red Cross is supplying medicine, doctors, nurses and other critical resources for the hundreds of thousands of Haitian people devastated by the earthquake.

The invitational will feature three games on Tuesday and three more on Thursday. The finals will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4.

The conference, formed in 2007, offers league competition in girls and boys soccer, girls and boys basketball and girls volleyball for students ranging from fourth to eighth grade. For more information on Hoops for Haiti, call Einstein Academy's athletic director Jason Smith at (847) 697-3836.
