Elgin man charged with attempted murder of his father in stabbing

An Elgin man has been charged with attempted murder after stabbing his father, authorities said.

Jeremiah M. Jefferson, 32, of the 700 block of Jefferson Avenue, appeared Saturday morning at a bond hearing.

A Cook County judge set Jefferson's bail at $500,000, which means he needs $50,000 to secure his release while the case is pending.

Police said they were called to the 700 block of Jefferson at 11:22 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a stabbing.

Police said the pair had been arguing inside the house when Jefferson stabbed his father once in the neck with an unknown object.

The Elgin Fire Department took the father to Sherman Hospital, while police arrested Jefferson at the house.

The father remained at Sherman Saturday.

Jefferson was charged with attempted murder on Friday, Elgin Deputy Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said.

If found guilty, he could spend up to 30 years in prison.
