Durty Nellie's hosts benefit concert for Haitian orphanage

With Haitian authorities estimating up to 200,000 deaths and another 1 million homeless following the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on Jan. 12, there's an urgent need for assistance.

Consider heading to Durty Nellie's in Palatine on Sunday for a concert benefiting the Grace House of Hope Girls Orphanage near the capital city of Port-au-Prince, just 15 miles from the earthquake's epicenter.

From 2 to 8 p.m. Jan. 31, all proceeds from donations, raffle ticket sales and 10 percent of food sales will go to Impact for Jesus, a Naperville-based not-for-profit that does extensive work in Haiti.

The organization recently updated the orphanage from one leaky tin-roofed room housing 30 girls to an eight-bedroom facility also containing two bathrooms, a kitchen, dining room and play area.

The earthquake caused the church housing the orphanage to collapse, leaving the 30 young residents homeless. The benefit concert will help rebuild the orphanage and provide food and medical supplies.

The concert will feature music by local bands including The BBC, Timbre and Page 3. Impact for Jesus founder Patty Meyer will give a presentation.

The suggested donation is $10 to $20. Durty Nellie's is located at 180 N. Smith St. (847) 358-9150. For more information, go to durtynellies.com and impactforjesus.net.
