Cocaine, pot, mushrooms in Round Lake Park bust

Two brothers are in the Lake County jail on charges they possessed about $41,000 in illegal drugs including cocaine and hallucinogenic mushrooms, Round Lake Park police said.

Chief George Filenko said the bust occurred about 4 p.m. Tuesday after one of the suspects gave written permission for officers and a drug-detecting dog to search the home he shared with his brother.

Hector P. Garcia, 31, and Francisco Garcia, 33, both of the 100 block of Washington Street, were charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

Filenko said both men were in the Lake County jail in lieu of $250,000 bond Wednesday. He said Francisco Garcia allowed the cops to search the rented house.

Officers Hector Lepe and Tony Colon found the hallucinogenic mushrooms, pot and the narcotic hydrocodone hidden throughout the home, Filenko said. After the officers completed their search, drug dog Blade went on the hunt.

Blade discovered a capped cardboard tube hidden in a closet and "strongly indicated" the presence of drugs. Filenko said the officers opened the tube and found 294 grams of cocaine inside.

Police assigned a $41,000 street value to the drugs. Filenko declined to specify what prompted police to visit the Garcias' house Tuesday.

"It was just based on information obtained in an ongoing probe that's led to a number of arrests in the last several months," he said.

Filenko said Francisco Garcia's 4-year-old daughter was visiting at the house when the drug bust happened. He said the girl is staying with a relative.

Police also seized scales and packaging materials from the house. Filenko said the Garcias were selling the drugs from their home.
