Northwestern's downtown lockdown lifted; search continues

Police are searching a building at Northwestern University's downtown Chicago campus after a report that a man inside may have a gun.

An alert posted on the school's Web site told those in the Rubloff Building to stay in their offices with their doors locked while campus and Chicago police conduct the search. It says someone reported seeing a man with a gun in his waistband inside an 11th floor elevator.

The lock down was lifted around 1 p.m. although authorities continued their search.

A campus police dispatcher would only say officers are following up on the report. But he declined to provide other details.

A Chicago police spokesman referred all questions to Northwestern.

According to the school's Web site, the Rubloff Building houses a number of research and law school offices. They include the Center on Wrongful Convictions.
