Man shot on Elgin's east side

Elgin police are searching for a man they say is responsible for shooting a man in his 20s this morning on the city's east side.

At 10:56 a.m., police responded to the report of someone being shot on the 400 block of Prospect Street.

A man walked up to the victim in a driveway leading to a small apartment building, shot him several times in the torso and then drove away, Deputy Police Chief Jeffrey Swoboda said.

The shooter is described as a Latino man, with shaved or short hair, 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-5, wearing dark clothing. He drove away in a small, dark-colored car north on Prospect.

The victim was taken to the emergency room at Sherman Hospital and his condition is unknown, Swoboda said.

The department's major investigations and gang units are involved in the case and at the moment, it is also too early to say whether the shooting is gang motivated, Swoboda said.

A woman who lives in an apartment in the 400 block of Prospect said she heard three shots fired.

Two uniformed Elgin officers in an unmarked car along the street this afternoon said they were waiting to follow up with someone about the shooting and they referred questions to Swoboda.
