'Super Terrific' film fest is brainchild of Des Plaines movie buffs

Passion for film takes center stage at the Des Plaines Theater on Saturday, Jan. 23, in the form of the Super Terrific Film Festival, put together by four Des Plaines natives who are Maine West graduates.

Produced by Rogue Lumen Productions and the Super Terrific Talk Show, an online podcast, the festival at 1476 Miner St. will feature four short films with Chicago area roots, all made with limited budgets, and all made with little more than the love of filmmaking in mind.

The suggested donation is $5. Doors open at 6 p.m. Concessions and drinks will be available in the lobby, and guests will have a chance to meet and chat with the filmmakers. Films will begin at 7 p.m., introduced by Bos Alvertos and Pete Douvlis, hosts of the Super Terrific Talk Show.

The films will cover a wide spectrum. "Only Hope" is a documentary by Maine West alumnus Tony Berg about two volunteers in Brazil who raise awareness for their farm by venturing into the jungle to conquer a mountain. The film is making it's U.S. debut after playing at festivals throughout Europe.

Another of the films, "Time Takes a Holiday," is a 20-minute short telling the story of Life, Death, and Time meeting in a diner to discuss the future of existence as Time prepares to retire. Amid coffee refills and overzealous waitstaff, the three debate the effects of the move and why miniature golf is more important than the balance of the universe. The showing is the premiere of Rogue Lumen's first production,

Rogue Lumen is the brainchild of Des Plaines natives Erik Strentz, Bos Alvertos, Jason Rzeczkowski, and Benjamin Harris. They seek to create a group of filmmakers, actors and creative types with a passion for all things cinematic, and provide for them a place to create and participate in the film making process - a sort of grass-roots approach to film production. They hope to keep the local independent film industry alive and well.
