Messenger library to debut new writers' group Jan. 28

The inaugural meeting of the Messenger Public Library Writers' Group will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28.

"Our Memoir Writers' Group has grown considerably in the year and a half of its existence and we've had many requests for a group that focuses on other types of writing - fiction, nonfiction and poetry," said Jessie Affelder, head of adult services. "Robyn Hannah-Andy is a staff member experienced in leading writing groups and 2010 has been designated Messenger's 'Year of the Writer,' featuring our first writer-in-residence, Travis Thrasher. Everything has come together, so the time is right for us to start this program."

Thrasher, a North Aurora resident, has worked in the publishing industry and has published a dozen books.

"Travis is a local treasure. His knowledge of both the publishing world and the art of writing and his unstinting willingness to share his expertise are just what writers' groups want in a mentor," said Janan Hudek Foster, the reference librarian. "With his kind, honest and giving nature, those who join our Writers' Group will have an enviable head start on better writing and getting published."

Thrasher will be at the Writers' Group meeting Thursday, Jan. 28, and at other selected meetings of the group throughout the year. Also upcoming will be his "Ask the Author" feature on the library's Web site, readings of his work and special presentations.
