Hanover Park Gallery will feature work of pyrograph artist

The Hanover Park Park District Community Center Gallery, at 1919 Walnut Ave., presents a show by Bartlett artist Sharon Bechtold Feb. 2-Feb. 28.

Bechtold's pieces are examples of pyrography, the technique of heating and burning wood to create images and textures.

Using a variety of burning instruments, soldering irons, blow torches, burning blades and other heated metal surfaces, Bechtold begins each piece by deciding upon a visual subject suggested by the natural pattern of the wood. She is inspired by the natural world and wildlife, especially wolves, birds and dogs, plus portraiture and fantasy.

Bechtold, a third-generation artist who has worked as a graphic designer and teacher, has devoted the last seven years exclusively to pyrography. Her unique style is based on classical art principals employed to render realistic images guided by personal inspiration.

"Through the month of February, I will be working on a wood-burning at the gallery," Bechtold said. "I've always enjoyed working in public. The interest, views, opinions, and just plain fun of hearing what people see in the wood, the art and their opinions and stories of personal encounters with the animals.

"All of this fuels my work and keeps the process exciting and alive."

She said that during longs shows, it is not uncommon for people to visit her more than once to check on the progress.

"I am thrilled to be working with Susan Matthews and hope that in bringing this exciting project to Hanover Park the residents will benefit."

Bechtold will post a blog on her Web site ArtofFireOnline.com to track her progress and encourage antidotes and suggestions from viewers (aka participants) to the creative process.

A reception for the Bechtold, who grew up in Hanover Park and graduated from Hoffman Estates High School in 1983, will be held 6-8 p.m. Feb. 8, in the gallery.
