Michigan upsets UConn
Michigan looked like the team it expected to be while No. 15 Connecticut struggled - again.
Zack Novak made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 11/2 minutes left and Manny Harris followed with a layup to power the Wolverines to a 68-63 win over the Huskies on Sunday.
The Wolverines (10-7) earned the signature win they needed in a season that started with them ranked 15th, coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1998. They'll have to finish the season very strong to earn another bid, but beating Connecticut could prove to be important.
"It's got to help us," Michigan coach John Beilein said.
The Wolverines' Stu Douglass scored 13 points, and Novak had 10 points. Sims had 8 points and 11 rebounds while dealing with foul trouble and Anthony Wright nearly doubled his season high with 9 points.
The Huskies (11-6) have lost three in a row for the first time since closing the 2006-07 season with four losses.
"We can't keep doing this," Jerome Dyson said. "We've got to fight through it because if we don't fix this right now, we're going to run out of time to fix it."
Connecticut's Kemba Walker had 15 points.
Indiana 81, Minnesota 78 (OT): Verdell Jones made a 12-foot jumper with 32.8 seconds left to give host Indiana the lead in overtime, and freshman Christian Watford made 2 free throws to seal the Hoosiers' win over Minnesota.
Jones finished with a career-high 24 points, while Watford had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Hoosiers (8-9, 2-3 Big Ten). Indinan, which snapped a three-game losing streak, won only once in the Big Ten last season.
"We were not losing," Jones said. "We weren't going to play an extra five minutes and lose at home. If we were going to play an extra five minutes, we were going to come out and bust our heads and win."
The Hoosiers led by 15 with 14:05 to go before Minnesota rallied for force overtime.
"Maturity is just going through so many experiences," said Hoosiers coach Tom Crean. "We went through a close game with them last year. The maturity part of that is understanding why did we lose and getting rid of the losing habits. "
Devoe Joseph led Minnesota (12-6, 3-3) with 19 points.
St. John's 67, DePaul 47: Justin Burrell scored 11 points, and 11 St. John's players scored as the host Red Storm routed DePaul.
Justin Brownlee added 10 points and leading scorer D.J. Kennedy (15.8 points a game) had 8 points in 25 minutes as St. John's (12-5, 2-3 Big East) won its second straight game.
Will Walker led DePaul (7-10, 0-5) with 14 points, and Mike Stovall added 11 points.
Marquette 93, Providence 63: Maurice Acker scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, Darius Johnson-Odom had 20 of his 22 in the first and host Marquette hit 13 3-pointers to beat Providence (11-7, 3-3 Big East). Lazar Hayward added 22 points for the Golden Eagles (11-6, 2-3).
Villanova 82, Georgetown 77: Scottie Reynolds scored 27 points, and host No. 4 Villanova ended a five-game losing streak to No. 11 Georgetown. The Wildcats (16-1, 5-0) moved into a tie for first place in the Big East with No. 16 Pittsburgh. Greg Monroe had 29 points and 16 rebounds for the Hoyas (13-3, 4-2).
Duke 90, Wake Forest 70: Miles Plumlee had career highs of 19 points and 14 rebounds, younger brother Mason Plumlee added 11 points and host No. 8 Duke (15-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) pulled away to beat Wake Forest. Al-Farouq Aminu had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Demon Deacons (12-4, 2-2).
Drake 69, ISU 59: Host Drake (8-11, 3-4 Missouri Valley Conference) built a 20-point lead and never looked back, beating Illinois State (13-5, 4-3) despite 26-second half points by Osiris Eldridge. Josh Young led Drake with 18 points.
