Carpentersville man guilty of attempted murder

A Kane County jury has convicted a Carpentersville man of attempted murder for beating a man in the head with a baseball bat in 2008, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Antwan D. Youngblood, 31, of the 1300 block of York Drive, faces up to 30 years in prison at sentencing March 4 in front of Judge Allen M. Anderson. He was found guilty of attempted murder, armed violence and two counts of aggravated battery late Tuesday after a jury deliberated about four hours.

The beating happened June 28, 2008, after someone fired a BB at Youngblood's car from a roof on the 2700 block of Hopi Lane in Carpentersville. A short time later, prosecutors said, Youngblood and another man returned with baseball bats to confront the 21-year-old victim and a second witness.

After a brief chase, Youngblood beat the victim in the head three times.

The witness later identified Youngblood as the attacker, and Youngblood acknowledged his role.

Prosecutors said the victim suffered a shattered skull and may experience permanent problems with vision, memory, balance and speech.

"The investigation by the Carpentersville Police Department gave us the proof we needed that the defendant's claim of self-defense was unfounded," Assistant State's Attorney Dan Carter said in a news release.
