Why omit Sox title in 'surprises' story?
In your article entitled "Top 20 surprises of the decade" there was a glaring omission. In 2005, the Chicago White Sox won the World Series, ending an 88-year baseball title drought for the city of Chicago.
The entire season was exciting with the White Sox getting out to a big lead early in the year. After sweeping Boston in the first round of the playoffs, the White Sox finished off the Angels in the ALCS with four straight complete games by their starting pitchers.
In the World Series, the South-Siders swept the Astros, bringing the title to Chicago for the first time since 1917. It was a dominating post season performance in which the White Sox went 11 and 1, a feat no other baseball team duplicated during the past decade.
No one expected the White Sox to win the World Series that year. In fact, there were some baseball publications that projected them to finish last in their division.
Somehow this remarkable feat was left off the list. How is it possible that "A hockey game being played at Wrigley Field" is more noteworthy than the White Sox' World Series title?
In addition, why include "That we'd make it to 2010" on the list? Was there ever a doubt? Did the Daily Herald think that the world would end and that we wouldn't be around to celebrate the New Year? If so, why didn't I see any articles about that during the past year? Either one of those so-called "surprises of the decade" could have been omitted to allow the White Sox' major accomplishment to receive its proper recognition. Since the Daily Herald either overlooked or chose to ignore the most important local sporting achievement of the past decade, I will not be renewing my subscription.
