Northwestern scientists to get White House honors

Two Northwestern University scientists will be honored at the White House next week.

They're among 100 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. The event is next Wednesday.

The scientists are Steven Jacobsen, an assistant professor of Earth and planetary sciences, and Dr. Melina Kibbe (KIH-bee), an associate surgery professor and director of the vascular lab at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center.

Jacobsen researches the role of water on the properties of the Earth's deep interior. He's also being cited for efforts to increase minority student enrollment in advanced science and math courses in Evanston public schools.

Kibbe's research involves seeking to develop new therapies for vascular disease and making existing treatments like angioplasty more effective.
