Please don't blame the dog's breed

In response to the Jan. 2 Fence Post letter from Joe Schrantz, I would like to say that not all pit bulls are vicious. In fact, there really are some very sweet, gentle lovable pit bulls, as well as Rottweilers and Dobermans.

It isn't just the breed. Sometimes it is the way the dog is trained, or lack thereof, the way the dog is treated, the fault of the owners, or sometimes it's just that particular dog's nature. I have seen some sweet-looking little Yorkies, and other small breeds who would love to tear your ankles off, yet no one wants to keep them confined at all times.

One of my own dogs, who is lovable, gentle and in general likes people, occasionally reacts unfavorably to a person that we may see on our walks ... one that he perceives to be a "bad guy" or one that he senses does not like dogs.

I think all dogs need to be under control of their owners. Any dog, in the right circumstances, can react in a way that could frighten someone. The pit bull had been leashed, except for the broken collar, which no one might have predicted. I'm sorry the golden was injured, but please don't blame the breed.
