Volunteer time to help improve adult literacy

The Literacy Connection, an organization dedicated to adult literacy, seeks volunteers to tutor adults in Basic Reading or English as a Second Language. Flexible training is provided and no special education or foreign language is required.

Attend a free orientation for prospective tutors from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6, at the Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

Training workshops will follow on Jan. 11, 13, 19, 20, 25 and 27 from 6 to 8:45 p.m. in the same location. Volunteers can make up any missed sessions during a later training series. Some training may also be done online.

Many adults struggle to read prescriptions, write checks or communicate with their children's teachers. Volunteers can help change that, and enable adults in your community to become more independent.

For information, call The Literacy Connection at (847) 742-6565, e-mail info@elginliteracy.org, visit elginliteracy.org or attend the Jan. 6 orientation.

The Literacy Connection, an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, serves adults and young children in 16 northwest suburban Chicago communities: Algonquin, Bartlett, Carpentersville, Cary, Elgin, South Elgin, East Dundee, West Dundee, Gilberts, Hanover Park, Hampshire, Hoffman Estates, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Streamwood, and Schaumburg.
