High bond set in Wheeling liquor store robbery, chase
A Cook County judge imposed six-figure bonds on two McHenry men charged with the armed robbery of a Wheeling liquor store late Sunday night.
Judge Kay Hanlon set bond at $300,000 for Tyson Burke, of the 3000 block of Cypress Court, and $200,000 for Kyle Larke, of the 5200 block of Springdale Lane, Tuesday in Rolling Meadows. Each defendant must post 10 percent of his bond to be released from custody.
While Burke, 27, brandished a shotgun and ordered the employee to open the register, Larke reached into the register and took about $300, said Assistant State's Attorney Adam Klugman during the defendants' bond hearing.
The men fled the store, in the 800 block of Milwaukee Avenue, in a 1996 Ford Explorer and were spotted by Wheeling police a short time later, said Deputy Police Chief Bill Benson. Ignoring orders to pull over, Burke sped away, Benson said. Citing public safety concerns, authorities elected not to pursue the vehicle and opted instead to broadcast its description to area law enforcement agencies, Benson said.
Authorities recovered the car and the defendants in McHenry, Klugman said. Following their arrest, both men admitted to police their involvement in the incident, said Klugman, who indicated that both defendants have a criminal background.
Burke received two years court supervision for a misdemeanor aggravated assault in 1999, Klugman said. Burke also received supervision on a 2003 misdemeanor battery charge and on a 2008 charge of driving on a suspended license, Klugman said. Larke received juvenile probation for possession of a controlled substance in 2009, Klugman said, and later spent six months in a juvenile corrections facility for violating that probation.
Noting contusions on Larke's face, Assistant Public Defender Salvatore Spaccaferro asked the court's permission to photograph his client, which the court granted.
Burke and Larke next appear in court on Jan. 27.
