Grayslake woman slightly injured after getting hit by freight train
A 79-year-old woman was injured after being hit by a freight train in downtown Grayslake Monday afternoon.
The Grayslake woman, whose name is being withheld by police, was hit by a Canadian National train as she walked westbound on Center Street about 2 p.m., according to Grayslake Police Sgt. Brian Ernst.
Witnesses and the train's engineer said the woman appeared confused while crossing the tracks. The gates were down, according to Ernst. She paused for a moment as the train approached and turned and faced the train directly as it struck her on the left side.
Grayslake paramedics responded to the scene quickly and removed her from the tracks. Ernst said her injuries were not life-threatening. She may have broken her arm. Paramedics took her to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Her condition is unknown.
