Missing woman found safe in Batavia

Batavia police said a 65-year-old woman who was missing for four hours after going out for a walk Sunday morning was found by a friend on a local bike path.

The woman, who was visiting from Wisconsin, left a house on Lincoln Street at 8 a.m. bundled up for a walk. When the woman, who suffers from borderline dementia, didn't return that morning, police were notified.

Police responded by activating an alert system normally used for missing children. Sgt. Fred Buss said the system can make 1,000 calls in 60 seconds.

Buss said Kane County emergency management officials also were notified.

The woman was eventually found on a bike path on the west side between Fabyan Parkway and the police station. She was taken to Delnor Community Hospital with possible frostbite.

"She was bundled up for a walk. She was dressed appropriately for an hour, but not for four, " Buss said.
