Fox Valley's first baby of the new year

Gael Guerrero waited until 2:27 p.m. Friday, but he was still the first 2010 baby born at Sherman Health in Elgin.

The son of Angelica Chavez and Victor Guerrero of Elgin weighed 6 pounds 4 ounces and has two excited brothers, Fabian, 6, and Miseal, 2.

Gael's mother says the baby resembles her, but his father, a factory worker, says his son favors him.

It was much earlier, 4:54 a.m. Jan. 1, when Joaquin Lebron became suburban Cook County's first baby of the year - and the decade.

Already the mother of two children, Rosa Rosada started feeling those familiar labor pains around 10 a.m. on New Year's Eve.

So her longtime boyfriend, Alvin Lebron, drove her to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates where, about 17 hours later, she gave birth to Joaquin Lebron.

He weighed 8 pounds, 12 ounces and was 21 inches long.

"I didn't even think about what day it was," said Rosada, 20, of Woodstock. "He's a big baby ... and he has a lot of hair."

Joaquin will come home to live with older brother Alvin, 3, sister Deyeneiry, 2, and their dad, Alvin Lebron, 25, a factory worker in Woodstock.

"Everything went well and (Joaquin) is healthy," Rosada said. "My son wanted a boy, so he's going to be happy."

A few hours later Taylor Brooke Schuman became the first baby born at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora.

Kristie and Matt Schuman have spent a lot of time with doctors recently, but Friday's stay was a joyful event.

Taylor was born at 6:24 a.m., two days after her father had knee surgery. The 8-pound, 13-ounce girl balances the Schuman family in Montgomery by joining brothers Hunter, 15, and Matthew, 5, and seven-year-old sister Riley.

Matt's mother, Jane Chidester, of Waterman, had to drop the couple off at the hospital because Matt is using crutches.

"We might all be sleeping downstairs for a couple of days," said Kristie Schuman. She is a records technician for the Batavia Police Department, and her husband is a printer.
