DuPage Co.'s first babies of the new year

DuPage County welcomed its first baby of the year when Olivia Patricia Barbush was born at 12:11 a.m. Friday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

The second daughter of Julie and Dan Barbush of Braidwood weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and joins her 2-year-old sister, Grace, who her parents say Olivia resembles.

"Olivia" was selected because it's a pretty name, and "Patricia" is Julie's mother's name, said Dan Barbush, who works for Maurer Services of Chicago providing emergency road assistance for semitrailer trucks and also operates snow plows for the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority. Julie works in customer service for an insurance company.

"We are blessed," said Julie.

"We can't wait to bring her home and see how our daughter reacts to her new sister," said Dan.

A few hours later, at 3:28 a.m., Dr. Mallika Rajendran set a personal record at Edward Hospital in Naperville when she delivered Brodie Allan Diehl. Brodie is the fourth child of Becky and Ken Diehl of Yorkville, and Dr. Rajendran delivered all of them, purely by the coincidence of being on call, said Ken Diehl.

Brodie weighed 5 pounds 13 ounces and was a little early, but that is in line with his siblings' births, said his father. The Diehls now have two girls and two boys: Kailee, 13; Corey, 8; Makenna, 20 months; and Brodie.

"We're done," said his father, who is a well driller. "It's a good balance having two of each. The last two are kind of close. We thought we should get it done before the last one is out of diapers and then we're back in diapers."

While her mother pointed out that Kailee is old enough to envision more diapers with a new baby, Corey is "so happy to have another boy," said his father.

The Diehls selected "Brodie" because Becky wanted a name that starts with "B," and "Allan" is from her family, said Ken.

Meanwhile, Taylor Brooke Schuman also balances out Kristie and Matt Schuman's family in Montgomery, by joining brothers Hunter, 15, and Matthew, 5, and 7-year-old sister, Riley, in their Montgomery home.

Taylor was born at 6:24 a.m. at Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora and weighed 8 pounds 13 ounces.

Matt's mother, Jane Chidester, of Waterman, had to drop the couple off at the hospital because Matt had knee surgery two days ago and is using crutches.

"We might all be sleeping downstairs for a couple of days," said Kristie Schuman, who is a records technician for the Batavia Police Department. The proud father is a printer.
