College basketball scouting reports
Detroit (9-4, 2-0) at UIC (4-8, 0-2)
When: noon at UIC Pavilion
Internet: horizonleaguenetwork.tv/uic
Audio: espnchicago.com
The skinny: The Flames are in the midst of four games in seven days, though at least they segue back into Horizon League play on the strength of Tuesday's 14-point win over Toledo. This should be a tussle between UIC's guards and Detroit's big guys. Indiana refugees Eli Holman (13.5 ppg, 9.9 rpg) and Xavier Keeling (13.2 ppg), who started their careers as Hoosiers with head coach Ray McCallum, are forces at both ends. UIC senior point guard Spencer Stewart has shot just 30 percent since returning to the fold, but he owns 37 assists in his seven games and makes the offense run better.
Wright St. (9-4, 2-0) at Loyola (10-2, 1-1)
When: 3 p.m. at Gentile Center
Internet: horizonleaguenetwork.tv
Radio: WAUR 930-AM, WNTD 950-AM, WLUW 88.7-FM
The skinny: The Ramblers are riding a five-game winning streak built on the backs of so-so opponents (the Dec. 16 win at Bradley not included). But today's game with the Raiders serves as a huge barometer of Loyola's progress. Wright State ranks No. 37 nationally in the kenpom.com rankings as it continues to feature one of the nation's best defenses. The Raiders force 17.6 turnovers per game, which hides the fact opponents shoot 43 percent from the floor. Loyola, off to its best start in 44 seasons, features sixth man Walt Gibler. The forward averages 11.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in just 21.3 minutes per game.
