Grayslake Central on a roll
Josh Rappaport scored a season-high 26 points, as Grayslake Central's boys basketball team defeated Rock Island 46-41 Tuesday night to earn a berth in the semifinals of the State Farm Holiday Classic.
Grayslake Central (6-4, 2-0) will play Champaign Centennial at 9 p.m. today at Illinois Wesleyan University's Shirk Center in Bloomington.
The championship game is New Year's Eve at 2:45 p.m.
The Rams trailed Rock Island 38-37 after three quarters, but outscored the Rocks 9-3 in the fourth.
Rappaport made 10 shots, including a 3-pointer. Andrew Sipes added 11 points and was Grayslake Central's only other double-digit scorer. C.J. Stempeck (6 points) and Mick Daly (3) were the only other Rams who scored.
Bloomington 69, Warren 56: At Pontiac, the Blue Devils' tournament run ended after two days.
Warren (2-8, 0-2 tourney) fell behind 13-12 after one quarter and trailed 32-24 at halftime.
Jameris Smith scored a team-high 15 points, including three 3-pointers, and also had 6 steals for the Blue Devils. Darius Paul had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Bloomington was led by Cole Jackson (three 3s) and James Wimp with 19 and 18 points, respectively.
Limestone 72, Lake Zurich 62: At Pekin, Jacob Brinlee's only basket, a 3-pointer, got the Bears within 68-62 with 49 seconds left, but they got no closer.
Lake Zurich (1-11, 0-3 tournament) never led, trailing by as many as 21 points in the third quarter. The Bears wound up outscoring the Rockets 23-16 in the fourth.
Aaron Lewandowski and Marko Grcic each scored 17 points for Lake Zurich, while Colin Rathe added nine.
Lake Zurich plays at 11 a.m. today against either Plainfield East or Geneseo in the seventh-place consolation game.
Hersey 54, Lake Zurich 31: At Pekin, the Bears dropped their first of two games Tuesday.
Lake Zurich trailed only 33-27 after three quarters but got outscored 21-4 in the fourth.
Marko Grcic was the Bears' only scorer in double figures with 11 points.
