Firefighters rescue dog from reservoir

Palatine firefighters rescued a golden retriever that fell into the icy Reimer Reservoir at Palatine and Quentin roads Monday morning.

The dog's owner called 911 at 11:26 a.m. after seeing his dog fall into the water, fire officials said. A firefighter donned an immersion suit, ventured out onto the ice to retrieve the retriever.

As he reached the dog, the ice collapsed and the firefighter fell into the water, then was able to lift the dog onto the ice, officials said.

The dog ran to its owner, and the firefighter was pulled from the water with a connected harness and rope. The dog was rescued in under 10 minutes and was unharmed, officials said.

A Buffalo Grove family's dog, Wrigley, was rescued in a similar situation last week after running out onto a partially frozen pond. Firefighters warn residents not to attempt to rescue an animal and to call emergency officials instead.
