Batavia Public Library teaches how animals survive wintry weather

When It Starts to Snow: A presentation for students ages 5 to 7 looks at how animals adapt to cold weather. It will be presented by a guide from the Morton Arboretum at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 28. No registration is required.

Board Game Challenge: For students ages 7 and older. Bring a friend and a favorite board game, or play one of the Library's games at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Chess Knight: Students, ages 8 and older, and teens and adults of all skill levels are welcome to play chess from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 29. Bring a chess board or use one of the library's. No registration is required.

Bingo: Play an hour of picture and number bingo at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 30. Children, ages 5 and younger, must be accompanied by an adult or older sibling. No registration is required.

Lyric Opera Lecture Series: The Tri-City Libraries Lyric Opera Lecture Series continues at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Geneva Public Library, 127 James St. Hear the story of "The Elixir of Love," learn about its composer, Gaetano Donizetti, and listen to highlights from the opera. Then at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 26, learn about "The Damnation of Faust" by composer Hector Berlioz at the Batavia Public Library. A member of the Lyric Opera Lecture Corps presents each program. No registration is required.

Book discussion: "Olive Kitteridge" by Elizabeth Strout will be discussed at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12. This Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of interconnected stories follows the lives of folks in a small Maine town, including the rather blunt and opinionated school teacher in the title. Copies of the book are available for check out at the library.

Anime Club: The Anime Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 and Wednesday, Jan. 27. This club is for anime and manga enthusiasts ages 13 to 19. Learn more about anime and manga, preview new anime movies and enjoy refreshments. Registration is not required. For information, call Lee Blakley, (630) 879-4777.

Polar-Palooza: The library's Winter Reading Club begins Saturday, Jan. 16. High school students and adults can pick up a Reading Log at the reference desk and the lobby kiosk. After reading or listening to three books, they can return the reading log to the reference desk to earn a free book and a chance to win one of several drawing prizes at the conclusion of Winter Reading Club, Feb. 28.

Great Decisions: The Great Decisions discussion group will meet to discuss "Human Rights in a New Era: Wars for Peace," at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20 at Batavia Public Library. Great Decisions is presented by the Tri-City Libraries Program Guild and is based on a program developed by the Foreign Policy Association. Discussions are held at Batavia, Geneva or St. Charles public libraries. Registration is required.
