Batavia alderman, wife named citizens of the year

For nearly 30 years, Buzz and Linnea Miller have volunteered to help make Batavia a better place to live and raise their children.

In recognition of their efforts, the Batavia Chamber of Commerce announced Saturday the Millers are its 2009 Citizens of the Year.

The annual award is given to Batavia residents who have made significant contributions to the city during their lifetime.

In announcing the award, the chamber cited the Millers' involvement in their kids' schools and city government, including Linnea's role as Batavia alderman since 1995.

"They've just done so many things," said Roger Breisch, executive director of the chamber of commerce. "They're a very deserving couple."

In a statement, Buzz focused on his wife's achievements.

"I am so proud of Linnea's accomplishments," he said. "She has always been willing to jump in and do what ever needs to be done."

The Millers moved to Batavia in 1978 and soon thereafter began volunteering at the schools their three children attended, as well as the Boy and Girl Scouts and Bethany Lutheran Church, according to the chamber.

Starting in the early '90s, Linnea took an interest in Batavia's future, serving on the city's Architecture and Design Committee before joining Batavia MainStreet, an organization that promotes the city's downtown.

She was appointed to the city council in 1995 and served as liaison to the chamber of commerce from 1996 to 2004.

Buzz, meanwhile, was chairman of the Batavia ACCESS Committee for five years, helping with the group's Concerts for a Cause, annual Toy Drive and fireworks display.

The Millers will be honored at the annual chamber of commerce awards dinner Jan. 30 at Lincoln Inn Banquets.
