Snow and rain to continue through Christmas

The bad news: the white stuff hitting the ground this morning is only the start of four days of precipitation that will last through Christmas.

The good news: not all of it will be white stuff.

Officials from the National Weather Service said the area is only expecting between one and three inches to hit the ground before it tapers off later Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning.

Then, after a dry spell Wednesday morning that could bring some flurries, the temperatures will rise above the freezing mark and rain or sleet will start to fall Wednesday evening, officials said.

That rain will continue Thursday before turning back into snow Christmas afternoon, when temperatures will dip back below freezing and snow will fall late Friday and into Saturday morning, officials said.

But Tuesday, officials said the slippery roadway is causing some spinouts throughout the Daily Herald coverage area. Fender bender accidents were reported in Antioch, Waukegan and on the Eisenhower Expressway.
