Abbott seeks EU approval to buy Solvay pharmaceuticals unit

Abbott Laboratories sought European Union approval to purchase Solvay SA's pharmaceuticals unit, the European Commission said in an e-mailed statement today.

The commission, the EU's executive branch in Brussels, said it would make a decision by Jan. 28, 2010.

Abbott is based in Libertyville Township.
