Sox send Ely, Link to LA, claim pitcher off waivers

The White Sox have sent right-handed pitchers John Ely and Jon Link to the Los Angeles Dodgers, completing Wednesday's trade for outfielder Juan Pierre and cash considerations.

The White Sox also claimed right-handed pitcher Freddy Dolsi off waivers from the Detroit Tigers on Friday.

Ely, 23, was 14-2 with a 2.82 ERA (49 ER/156.1 IP) in 27 starts with Class AA Birmingham last season. Futuresox.com rated him as the 13th best prospect in the organization after a breakout season in a pitchers' park.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder was named to the Southern League mid and postseason All-Star Teams. He led the league in strikeouts (125) and tied for the lead in victories.

Ely, who originally was drafted by the White Sox in the third round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, has gone 30-15 with a 3.75 ERA (149 ER/357.2 IP) in 67 games (66 starts) in three minor-league seasons.

Link, 25, went 1-2 with a 3.99 ERA (25 ER/56.1 IP) and 13 saves in 48 relief appearances with Class AAA Charlotte in 2009. The 6-foot-1, 190-pounder has gone 17-15 with a 3.87 ERA (126 ER/293.0 IP) and 67 saves over five minor-league seasons in the San Diego (2005-07) and White Sox (2007-09) organizations. He was acquired by the Sox on July 31, 2007 in return for Rob Mackowiak.

Dolsi, 26, spent the majority of the 2009 season with Class AAA Toledo, going 4-3 with 3.83 ERA (22 ER/51.2 IP) and 10 saves in 39 relief appearances. He also went 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA (2 ER/10.2 IP) in six games with the Tigers last season.

The 6-foot-0, 160-pounder is 24-20 with a 3.14 ERA (116 ER/332.1 IP) and 42 saves in 183 appearances (20 starts) over seven minor-league seasons in the Detroit organization. He signed with the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on May 12, 2003.

The native of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic has made 48 major-league relief appearances with the Tigers, going 2-5 with a 3.55 ERA (23 ER/58.1 IP) and two saves.
