ComEd helping Hoffman Estates go green

ComEd has set aside about $100,000 for Hoffman Estates businesses that make a commitment to save energy.

The ComEd Energy Challenge Program is underway, using the utility company's Smart Ideas program. ComEd is offering to cover up to a third of the costs for select green initiatives a business undertakes.

Claire's Boutiques has already participated by replacing less efficient halogen light bulbs at its 372,000-square-foot distribution center on Central Road. That cost the accessories company $84,000, but it will save $37,000 yearly in energy costs. ComEd kicked in with $36,800 for the project.

Plote Construction has also replaced lights at three of its shops for about $27,000, with a ComEd grant of $7,300.

The deadline to apply is at the end of the year, but funding could be available in January if there's enough demand.
