Buffalo Grove police nab bank robbery suspect after he crashes car

A bank robber suspect who led police on a chase is in custody after crashing his getaway car into a utility pole Thursday morning in Buffalo Grove, police said.

Anthony Singletary, 37, of the 400 block of Gregory in Glendale Heights, was arrested and will be charged with armed robbery, authorities said.

Singletary entered the TCF Bank located in the Jewel Food Store on the 0-100 block of McHenry Road around 10 a.m. and handed tellers a note demanding money, Buffalo Grove Sgt. Mike Szos said. He revealed a handgun tucked into his waistband and was given an undisclosed amount of money, Szos said.

Witnesses followed Singletary into the parking lot and pointed out his vehicle to responding police units, Szos said. With their lights and sirens on, police followed him on various streets. Singletary crashed into a light pole at Aptakisic and Weiland roads, about three miles from the bank.

Singletary complained of stomach pain and was taken to an area hospital, police said.

A soft air pistol, cash and activated dye packs were located inside Singletary's vehicle, authorities said.

Szos said Singletary may face local charges of fleeing and alluding police, but the FBI will take over the bank robbery investigation.

Federal charges could come today, Special Agent Ross Rice said. He said the agency is looking into whether Thursday's bank robbery has any connection to bank robberies on Monday in both Mount Prospect and Hanover Park.
