Glen Ellyn man in critical condition after driving into ATM at bank
A 23-year-old Glen Ellyn man was in critical condition Thursday after his sport utility vehicle smashed into the steel supports of an ATM drive-through at a Glen Ellyn bank, police said.
Police said Brian J. Hayes was traveling east on Pennsylvania Avenue about 5:30 a.m. when his 2001 Suzuki Grand Vitara left the road and crashed into the supports at Harris Bank, 405 Pennsylvania Ave.
Police said evidence recovered at the scene led them to suspect alcohol was involved. Deputy Chief Bill Holmer would not elaborate.
Hayes was unresponsive and trapped in his vehicle when paramedics arrived. It took about 20 minutes for rescue workers from the Glen Ellyn Volunteer Fire Department to extricate Hayes. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Hayes was flown to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.
Holmer said police are investigating Hayes' whereabouts before the crash.
