Cadigan drops out of 10th Congressional Dist. GOP race

As a Republican candidate for the 10th Congressional District seat, William Cadigan thought it might be time to freeze government spending.

But it was a lack of money that caused the Winnetka attorney to withdraw Wednesday from the primary race. His exit thins the number of Republican primary candidates to five.

An Arlington Heights native, Cadigan had been concentrating his campaign in that area and claimed good support. But it wasn't enough, he said.

"Political support gets you part of the way but money is required to do the rest," he said. "We had financial goals and weren't meeting them, and didn't see how we would between now and the end of the campaign."

Cadigan, 45, said he wasn't comfortable with the resources available and after consulting with his team and others decided to act quickly.

"I wanted to go into the holidays without this hanging over my head," he said.

The Republican field for the seat being vacated by longtime incumbent Mark Kirk, who is running for U.S. Senate, now includes: state Rep. Elizabeth Coulson of Glenview; Kenilworth business owner Bob Dold; Arie Friedman, a pediatrician from Highland Park; Winnetka economist Dick Green; and, Paul Hamann, an electrical engineer from Lake Forest. The primary is Feb. 2.

Cadigan said he hasn't decided which of the other candidates he may support.

"I'm withdrawing from the race, not withdrawing from the candidates and causes I think will move the country ahead," he said.
