Illinois is home to rough roads

It seems the Illinois Department of Transportation has a sense of humor. As I bumped to a stop recently at the intersection of Algonquin and New Wilke Road I spotted a yellow caution sign ahead, "Rough Road."

Perhaps the sign should read instead Wretched Way. The road has been in this condition for at least a couple of winters.

Whenever I entertain guests from Colorado, New Mexico or points west, I'm a bit ashamed of our poor roads in Illinois In those states not only beautiful scenery but well-tended roads greet the traveler. True, their weather conditions with less freezing and thawing are more conducive to good pavement, but isn't honesty the best policy? Perhaps we should permanently post our warning signs on all major highways into the state warning of the travel conditions that await.
