Potkonjak, Antioch spoils Lakes' big party

Lakes planned some special moments Monday - 1950's theme night and Eagles girls basketball coach Pete Schneider's 50th birthday.

But visiting Antioch spoiled the party.

The Sequoits rolled past the District 117 rival Eagles 56-30 in a North Suburban Prairie Division game in Lake Villa.

The Sequoits (3-6, 2-1) featured three players in double figures.

Andi Potkonjak rang up a game-high 19 points, Lauren Tiffany added a dozen and Allie Anttila chipped in 10 points.

"When we get a number of players in double figures it meadns we've got a good chance at winning," said Sequoits coach Tim Borries.

The Sequoits started fast and didn't let up.

"It the first time all year we've come out that aggressive," Borries said.

"Maybe it's a rival game against Lakes. The Girls were ready to play out of the gates. Full-court pressure made the transition look awesome. We made it look well from defense to offense."

The Sequoits jumped out to a 10-3 lead, as Tiffany scored 6 points and hit a 3-pointer - something different for her this year.

"It's new this year for me, I've never been a big scorer," Tiffany said.

"Coach Borries got me into shooting 3's over the summer. I get the chance now being on the wing."

The Sequoits led 20-5 at the end of the quarter and extended their lead to 36-14 at the break.

Jennefer Totten led Lakes (2-6, 0-3) with 11 points and Ashley Palmy added 6 points.

Asja Triplett scored 4 points and pulled down 17 rebounds.

"Antioch was a tough match for us," Schneider said. "We're just lacking in some fundamentals. We've got a ways to go. Triplett has turned into a player for us. She's doing a great job getting a lot of rebounds."

Schneider was treated to a surprise 50th birthday party in the school cafeteria from his team and others he's been associated with over the years.

"There's nothing better than being with all these kids," Schneider said.

"Mundelein girls came out here and parents that I used to coach at Warren and Libertyville years ago. It's just great to see all this."
