Authorities probe Illinois college student's death

GRANITE CITY -- Authorities are investigating the death of a 19-year-old Illinois college student who died from a gunshot wound after a car crash.

Stephen Nemsky died Thursday evening. His death has been classified as a homicide.

Police say the student who was studying automotive collision repair at Southwestern Illinois College was due to meet friends that evening.

Madison County Sheriff's Captain Brad Wells says police received a call around 10:30 p.m. about a car crash.

Wells says Nemsky got out of his vehicle and collapsed in the road. Police say Nemsky is believed to have had a "violent encounter" with a suspect or suspects.

Officers found Nemsky dead in the roadway. An autopsy shows he died of a gun shot wound.
