Loyola Marymont tops Notre Dame
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- When Notre Dame couldn't put Loyola Marymount away, Jarred DuBois made the Fighting Irish pay.
After Notre Dame's Tim Abromaitis was called for a 5-second violation when he couldn't get the ball in, DuBois hit a 3-pointer with 8 seconds left to lift Loyola Marymount to an 87-85 victory Saturday night.
"The shot I made was not the game-winning play," DuBois said. "Yes, it made the score, but it was not the game-winning play. It was an all-team win. Everyone who stepped on the floor contributed to this win."
The Irish (9-2) had a last chance to tie it, but Tory Jackson's jumper in traffic with 2 seconds left missed, and Drew Viney got the rebound.
Notre Dame coach Mike Brey said the Irish didn't call time out before the last shot because they are a veteran team.
"There was plenty of time," he said. "I think we hurried a little bit there."
Loyola Marymount coach Max Good said he wanted Viney to take the final 3-pointer. But when Viney wasn't open, Larry Davis passed to DuBois.
"We had good spacing, but J.D. was about the fourth option, but it was one of the options," Good said. "We had all our 3-point shooters in the game."
Brey was disappointed in his team's defense.
"We couldn't get a key stop when we really needed to get a key stop. To give up 87 points is ..." he said, trailing off. "They played loose and played really well and made big shots."
Vernon Teel led the Lions with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Viney scored 18, DuBois and Kevin Young added 12 each, Ashley Hamilton had 10 and the Lions' bench outscored Notre Dame's reserves 21-4.
The Lions were too athletic for the Irish, outrebounding them 40-33 and outscoring them 42-30 in the paint. Loyola Marymount shot 52 percent, while the Irish shot 45 percent.
Luke Harangody led the Irish with 24 points and 11 rebounds, Abromaitis added 23, Ben Hansbrough had 14 and Tyrone Nash had 13.
Teel said he believes the Irish overlooked the Lions in anticipation of next Saturday's game against UCLA.
"We get overlooked because we are on the West Coast, and the Big East is one of the best leagues," he said.
