Hampshire's Heine reaches 1,000-point mark

About the only suspense as Hampshire's girls basketball team visited Harvard Friday night was when Chrissy Heine would score her 1,000th point in a Whip-Pur uniform. Even that didn't take too long. Heine got the milestone on a midrange jumpshot with 3:37 left in the third quarter.

Heine finished the evening with 22 points for the game and 1,003 for her career as the Whips thrashed the Hornets, 73-23, in the Big Northern East opener for both teams.

The achievement left Heine momentarily at a loss for words.

"Words can't describe (the feeling)," she said. "Because there's just so much hard work and everything and then you finally get it."

She also contributed 6 rebounds, 5 steals, 2 blocks and 2 assists in less than 3 quarters, passing up a couple of shots early to find open teammates.

"Sometimes I get yelled at for not being so selfish," she said. "That's my problem, I like to look for the open person and find open shots for everyone."

Heine's sister, Jackie, who also scored her 1,000th career point at Harvard, was there to congratulate her.

"It's a great accomplishment for a kid," said Hampshire coach Sue Ellett.

Ellett thinks Heine is the ninth player in school history to achieve the milestone. She is the first since Amanda Walker in 2005.

The outcome of the game was not in doubt for long. Hampshire (8-0) scored the first 11 points and led 13-4 after one quarter and 32-7 at halftime.

Jessica Van Dorin scored 15 points, all on 3-pointers, for Hampshire.

"She told Chrissy she only needs 333 baskets (to reach 1,000 points)," joked Ellett.

Alex Dumoulin added 8 points and 4 rebounds, and Kelsey Anderson, Cassie Dumoulin and Karla Vietinghoff scored 6 points apiece.

Hampshire applied full court pressure early and often. The Whips forced a mind-boggling 42 turnovers while holding Harvard to single digits in 3 of the 4 quarters.
