Elk Grove gets in win column

Elk Grove hoped its close call at Fremd last Saturday was a sign of better things ahead.

It was as the Grenadiers got in the win column for the first time this season with a 49-37 Mid-Suburban East boys basketball victory at Wheeling on Thursday night.

Keven Zelaya scored 11 points and Brian Battaglia added 10 points as the Grenadiers (1-6, 1-1) used a 15-5 second-quarter to take a 24-12 halftime lead. Wheeling (2-5, 0-2) never got closer than 6 points.

"They got a lot of second-shot opportunities and got to the free-throw line (18-for-24) and took advantage of it the whole game," said Wheeling coach Lou Wool. "I thought Elk Grove played harder and got to loose balls and did what they had to do to win it."

John Lorenz scored 7 points and Scott Siwicki and Joey Bishoff added 6 points apiece for the Grenadiers. Tyler Shapiro scored 14 points and hit two 3-pointers for Wheeling.

"We took a lot of 3-point shots (1-for-12 in the first half) and a lot of those were very quick shots," Wool said. "We've got a young, inexperienced team trying a new system offensively and we just have to be patient with it."
